A Ghostly Guest of Honor
Opened in 1885, the Princess Theater was the finest in Australia and rivaled many in the great capitols of the world. Frederick Baker, an English actor, so fell in love with Melbourne and the Princess, he moved there permanently and performed the greatest plays of the time. In a final scene as Mephistopheles in Faust, he is lowered through a trap door and died of a heart attack. It didn't keep his ghost from taking a bow at the end. The theater keeps an empty chair in the audience for him, though he's often seen on stage as if he's about to go on.
